Adobe has a variety of software products from the free Adobe Reader 9 to more complicated Photoshop and other graphic design software. Although both the Reader and the writer (Adobe Acrobat) software deal primarily with the portable document file (PDF) format, the two products have different capabilities and provide different options for PDF users.

History of Adobe Acrobat 9

1. Adobe Systems Incorporated is headquartered in San Jose, Calif. The company focuses on the creation of multimedia and creativity software products, like PDF Reader, Acrobat (PDF writer), Flash, Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Dreamweaver and Soundbooth. John Warnock and Charles Geschke, who left Xerox to develop and sell the PostScript page description language that Apple Computer licensed in 1985, founded the company in 1982. Upon acquiring Macromedia in 2005, Adobe added newer software products and platforms, such as Flash and Flex to the lineup.
   Throughout the years, Adobe has developed the PDF Reader and writer software, which has become a global standard in electronic document sharing. The PDF was created in 1993 for using two-dimensional documents, independent of an application software, hardware or operating system.

2. The Adobe Reader 9 software is a free downloadable software package for electronic document reading and reviewing in the PDF format. It allows the user to view PDF documents. Basic Adobe Reader packages allow the user to view, search, digitally sign, verify, print and collaborate on PDF files.

3. Adobe Acrobat allows the user to create PDF documents and forms from existing files. The writer software also allows the user to edit PDF forms, like filling in blanks and adding signatures. The writer software also lets the user control her work by applying passwords, setting permissions and otherwise safeguarding the documents and portfolios. High-quality PDF files are also commonly used by in the printing industry as a way to convert graphic and text documents into a printed document, such as a newspaper or magazine.

4. The current free Adobe Reader 9.1, allows you to view, print and search PDF files as with the old software packages, but you can also work with PDF Portfolios and maps. The Reader package allows the user to author, store and share documents and has interactivity with Adobe Flash technology. With the 9.1 version, the user also receives an online PDF converter to create PDF documents from existing files in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and many other applications.

5. Acrobat 9 allows the user to create polished PDF files, present multiple documents in a PDF Portfolio as well as add multimedia options in a single file. The package allows use of passwords, permissions and permanent removal of sensitive information. Version 9 provides team sharing, so team members can view a document and respond with comments, thus streamlining the process of reviews and approvals. In addition, Acrobat 9 allows the user to create complex forms that can be filled out and saved electronically.

6. In 2009, Adobe released the ultimate in PDF writer technology with the Adobe Acrobat Version 9 Pro Extended Package. This software package also includes Adobe Presenter, Adobe LiveCycle Designer ES and Adobe 3D Reviewer software. The software gathers user feedback, builds consensus and gets everyone on the same page through interactive document reviews and real-time collaboration. The package also includes audio, video, images, 3D and maps technology in PDF documents.

Adobe Reader 9 is Adobe’s free PDF file viewer. Adobe.com says that Adobe Reader 9 is used to view, search, print and collaborate on Adobe PDF-formatted files. One of the features in Adobe Reader 9 is the automatic updater, enabled by default when the program is installed. If you want to disable this feature, the setting can easily be removed.

1. Open Adobe Reader 9 by clicking on its desktop icon or selecting it from your Start menu.
2. Select “Edit” from Adobe Reader’s menu.
3. Click “Preferences,” located at the bottom of the “Edit” drop-down.
4. Choose “Updater” from the menu on the left to open options specific to the Adobe updater.
5. Select “Do not download or install updates automatically.” Click “OK” to close the “Preferences” screen. Adobe Reader 9 will no longer check for updates.

Your most important tasks can all be handled within the Windows Vista environment. The PDF file has become a major source of documentation on any operating system, offering easy viewing of electronically printed materials. Using Acrobat Reader 9 on Windows Vista, you can read and use PDFs on the Internet.

Download Acrobat Reader 9

1. Proceed to the Adobe Reader website (see Resources below).
2. Click the “Download Adobe Reader” link.
3. Select the destination directory for your download. By default, Windows Vista will download files to a Temp directory, so you may want to set it to download to the desktop so it is easier to find.
4. Click “OK” to allow the download to begin.

Install Acrobat Reader 9 on Windows Vista

1. Double-click the executable that you downloaded to begin the install process.
2. Click “Next” on the install file’s introductory screen to proceed to the End-User License Agreement.
3. Click on the “Accept User Agreement” button, followed by “Next.” This indicates that you have read the User Agreement and are ready to install Adobe Reader.
4. Choose the directory in which you wish to install Adobe Reader. By default Adobe Reader will install to the “C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader” directory, but you can change that by clicking “Browse” and choosing a different directory path.
5. Click “Next” once you’ve chosen the installation path you wish to use. This will begin the installation process.
6. Click “Finish” once you have completed installing Adobe Reader. This will close the installation program and return you to the desktop.
7. Upgrade your version of Adobe Reader by starting it (click Start, All Programs, “Adobe,” and then “Reader”) and waiting for the Reader to auto-detect its version number. It will then contact the Adobe web site to verify it is the latest version. If it isn’t then it will prompt you to upgrade to the latest available version. The update installs automatically without additional input.

• Consider purchasing the full version of Adobe Reader 9, known as Adobe Acrobat 9. Acrobat offers a full range of features and functions like custom bookmarking, .pdf editing and hypertext linking.

Adobe Acrobat Reader 9, a PDF viewer, has a convenient plug-in for Firefox 3, a Web browser. The plug-in works behind the scenes when you click a link to a PDF file from within Firefox. When you are using Firefox after installing the plug-in, your PDFs will open automatically in Adobe Reader 9.

1. Open your Firefox browser and go to the Firefox download page. (See “Resources.”)
2. Click the green “Download Now” button in the Adobe Reader section. Choose your operating system and click the “Continue” button.
3. Click the “Download” button. A dialog box will appear with an “Install Now” button. Click this button.
4. Click the “Restart Firefox” button. When you find a link to a PDF you want to view, just click it and it will open in Adobe Reader.
5. Open your Firefox browser and go to the Sample PDF site. (See “Resources.”) Click the “Click here to test your PDF software” button to test your Adobe Reader.

Adobe Reader 9 is a free PDF-viewing application available for the Mac OS X, Windows, Linux and Solaris operating systems. Unlike PCs, Mac OS X has no “Add/Remove Program” feature. To remove a program on a Mac, you erase the application. Some programs, like Adobe Reader 9, also have preference files that you should delete to remove all traces of the program from your computer. If you do not delete the preference files, the only consequence is that if you reinstall the program it will remember your previous preferences.

1. Drag the Adobe Reader folder containing the application icon to the Trash in the Dock. Drop it when the Trash icon darkens.
2. Click on your main hard drive, usually labeled “Macintosh HD,” under “Devices” in the Finder. Double-click on the “Library” folder in the main part of the Finder window. Double-click on the “Preferences” folder.
3. Select the files called “com.adobe.Reader.plist” and “com.Reader_x86_9.0.plist.” The name of the second file may be different if you have a version of Reader other than 9.0 installed. Drag the preference files to the Trash. Drop them when the Trash icon darkens.
4. Go to the “Finder” menu and select “Empty Trash.” Confirm that you want to empty the Trash in the onscreen window.

PDF stands for portable document format. This is a cross-platform file format created by Adobe to allow an exchange of information in a consistent format between various platforms. The Adobe Reader 9 is a free PDF reader made available by Adobe to allow users to read PDF files. The Adobe Reader 9 is included on many computer systems straight from the factory. The Adobe Reader 9 only allows users to read PDF files. To write files for Adobe Reader, you need to use software capable of writing PDF.

1. Download CutePDF and install the software (see “References”). It installs as a printer, so almost any program you can print from will be able to use the printer, allowing you to create a PDF file anyone can view in Adobe Reader 9. Once the software is installed, you won’t see anything until you use the “Print” command in one of these applications.
2. Open the file you want to write to PDF format. Do this in whatever program you created the file in by going to the “File” menu and choosing “Print.” This gives you access to the print command dialogue box and a list of available printers.
3. Select the CutePDF printer under printer names from the drop-down menu and click the “Print” command. Your file will be printed (written) as an Adobe PDF file, capable of being opened and read by anyone using Adobe Reader 9 on any platform.

Adobe Reader 9 not only makes it easy to view a PDF file; they also make copying text and pictures to the clipboard a breeze. With just a few clips you can save these items for use in other documents. Even better, the snapshot tool makes it possible to copy an entire page in a single click, making the page immediately available through the paste from clipboard option.

1. Download the latest version of Adobe reader from the official website. If you have a version earlier than version 6, there is no snapshot tool; instead there is a graphics tool, which functions a little differently.
2. Open up a document in the Adobe Reader program by clicking on “File” at the top of the toolbar. Click “Open” in the drop down box. Choose your document from the documents folder.
3. Navigate up to the top tool bar once again after your chosen document has opened. Click on “Tools.” Click on “Select & Zoom” and move the mouse to the new tab that opens up to the right. Slide your mouse down to “Snapshot Tool” and click.
4. Move the cursor to the area of the document that you wish to copy. Once you have completed the above steps your cursor will change from the hand or arrow that you were using, to an open cross. Hover the cursor in the vicinity of what you would like saved to the clipboard and double click.
5. Drag the marquee square over the area that you would like to save, and highlight it. Once you have double clicked your mouse, a marquee will appear made up of dotted lines, you can include as much of the document as you would like for saving by highlighting the area with the marquee.
6. Once you have dragged the square over the entire area that you have chosen to highlight, click the screen one more time. A box will pop up prompting you to hit “OK” in order to save it. Viola! You’re done. Now, the copied section is on the clipboard and ready for pasting elsewhere.

The Adobe Reader 9 program is a free software tool that allows you to view print documents such as manuals or novels directly on your computer and scroll through the pages much more quickly than on a website. You can create bookmarks of specific pages in the document for easier navigation later.

1. Open the Adobe Reader 9 software program by double-clicking on its desktop icon or by choosing it in the “Start” menu. Click on the “File” button on the top toolbar and then click “Open.” Choose the PDF file that you want to create a bookmark for. Click on the “View” button and then point your mouse over the “Navigation Panels” option to bring up a second menu.
2. Click on the “Bookmarks” button to bring up the bookmarks menu on the left side of the screen.
3. Scroll through the pages of the PDF document until you find the one that you want to bookmark for future reference.
4. Click on “New Bookmark” either directly on the bookmark menu or by clicking on “Documents” at the top toolbar and then choosing the “New Bookmark” option.
5. Type in a name for the bookmark that will be easy to remember and will remind you of what is on the page. Click on “OK” to save the bookmark and cause it to appear in the bookmarks menu.
6. Click on the image of the new bookmark to immediately navigate back to the saved page.

If you use the internet, you have probably encountered PDF files. According to Adobe, there were over 250 million PDF files available on the internet as of January 2010. PDF stands for Portable Document Format. These files can be viewed, saved and printed using Adobe Reader. Adobe Reader 9 is a free software program that is available directly from Adobe’s website or from a licensed distributor. Adobe Reader 9 is a version of Adobe that was released in July 2008.

1. Visit adobe.com.
2. Place your cursor over the “Downloads” menu at the top of the screen, and select “Get Adobe Reader” from the drop down menu that appears.
3. Select “Download” if Adobe Reader 9 is listed as the version of Adobe Reader available for download on this page. If a different version of Adobe Reader is listed, then continue to the next step. (This page allows you to automatically download the most recent version of Adobe Reader, so if a newer version of Adobe Reader is available you will need to continue to the next step to download Adobe Reader 9.)
4. Click on the link titled “Learn More.” This link is located right above the “Download” button.
5. Click on the link titled “Obtaining older versions of Adobe Reader,” located under the heading “Enterprise.”
6. Select your computer’s operating system and your language from the drop down menus, and press “Continue.”
7. Click on the circle immediately to the left of “Adobe Reader 9″ to select this version of Adobe Reader.
8. Press “Download Now.”

If you have downloaded Adobe Reader 9 so that you can view a PDF file, you may be left wondering exactly how to go about opening the file using the program. Adobe Reader 9 is a free program that was created specifically to open and view PDF files. According to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, PDF files were designed for “distributing documents cross-platform, with original formatting intact and independent of the application software used to create them.” You can take advantage of this convenient file format using Adobe Reader 9.

2. Click on the “File” menu on the top menu bar.
3. Select “Open.” It is the top option in the “File” menu.
4. Select the PDF file that you want Adobe Reader 9 to open.
5. Press “Open.”
